How to connect portable generator at home?
Inn this article you will learn about how to connect a portable generator at home with different methods and their limitation or which care you have to take while installing the portable generator. Method 1- With separate MCB
This connection diagram for portable generator connection with separate MCB. First thing you have to do is dis-connect the main supply completely by turning off main switch and MCB 1. Now, connect portable generator with three pin power inlet power plug and connect this plug to MCB 2 as shown in figure 1.

Operation and Working:
Case 1- When power supply is available from power source
When main power supply is available that time power will flow as shown as in figure 2. The blue doted line shows the direction of power flow. Here, generator is in stand by mode.Here, the first MCB is turned ON and second MCB should be OFF.

Case 2- when power supply is not available
When main power supply is not available that time power will flow as shown as in figure 3. The blue doted line shows the direction of power flow. Here, the first MCB is turned OFF and second MCB should be ON.

Method 2- With Change-over switch
To connect portable generator at home with change over switch, first you have to install a change over switch having rating about 65 A beside main distribution board. Now, connect the main power supply to change over switch for this select a suitable size of wire then connect a portable generator with 3 pin socket to change over switch. It is ready for supplying power when main power supply is not available.

Method 3- Direct install with power plug
This is a very simple and most dangerous method to connect a portable generator at home. In this method connect generator directly to 3 pin plug at home. In the case of main power failure, first dis-connect or turn off the main switch and connect the portable generator with the plug.

In the case, when main power supply is available from source that time power will flow as shown in figure 5 and generator are in stand by mode and but when main power source is fails to supply power that time power will flow as shown as in the below figure 6. The blue arrows shows the direction of power flow. Here, The MCB should be OFF.
