How to control One Lamp from three/six different places and working principle of intermediate switch?

In this article we learn about how to control a lamp with 3 different switches at different places. This is very useful. For doing this we required two 2-way switch, 1 intermediate switch and a lamp. Connect all these as shown as in the below diagram.

Fig.-1

In the above diagram the lamp is on because the circuit is in closed condition. To understand easily the circuit diagram for this, is given below.
Fig.-2
In this case the lamp(bulb) is in off condition. So, the circuit is open condition.

Here, one more example is given. How you can turn on/off a lamp or bulb from six different places. For this we required four number of intermediate switch, two number of 2 way SPDT switch and 1 bulb. Connect all these components as shown as in the figure below.

What is Intermediate switch , its construction and working principle?

Fig.-4
An intermediate switch have four terminals. Because of this terminals it is possible to change the flow of the current from one circuit to another circuit as shown as in figure 1.(inside fig-4) In this figure their are ON and OFF the supply by two ways.  The four terminals of intermediate switch is shown in fig 1. Sometimes, the terminal  contacts of switch is connect terminal 1 with terminal 3 and terminal 2 with terminal 4 as shown in fig 1 a (position 1) and it can connect the terminal contacts of switch is connected with  terminal 1 with 2 and terminal 3 with 4 as shown in fig 1 a (position 2).

When the knob of the switch is UP, then the vertical contacts  1 and 3 & 2 and 4 are connected as shown in fig 1[a] (position 1) And when the knob is DOWN, then the Horizontal contacts are 1 and 2 & 3 and 4 are connected as shown in fig 2[a] (position 2).

Application and Uses:

This kind of switch is used in a hall, go-downs, big rooms, where different lamps are required to turn on and off from different places and in a multistory building, the ground floor or car parking lights can be controlled from any floor.
